How To

How can I get started in Base Jumping

Base jumping (also called free-fall Parachuting) allows participants to jump from fixed objects (usually cliffs), including bridges, towers and buildings, with no equipment attached. To safely land, the participant jumps from the object. It's similar to skydiving but you don’t have to wear a parachute or hold your breath as you wait to open it.

The most common type of base jumper is called a wingsuit jumper. A wingsuit is made of two pieces of fabric sewn together. One piece covers the chest, arms, and legs while the second covers the legs. Special boots are worn by the jumper that allow him/her stand upright in flight. Jumpers tend to pull their feet up tight during descent. This causes the material that covers the legs to gather and form a large volume of air under the jumper. When this air pocket becomes big enough, the jumper opens his/her parachute and lands safely.

Base jumpers may use powered suits to propel themselves faster through the air. Two main components of powered suits are a backpack with batteries and a pack that can be worn underneath the jumper's clothing. These packs have small rockets that can shoot hot gases at high speeds. This creates thrust, which propels the jumper forward. These suits can be quite loud and heavy.

Some people who want to try out BASE jumping don't know what they're getting into. If you decide to learn how to BASE jump, make sure you understand the risks involved. You could fall off a cliff or hit an obstacle upside-down or head-on. Or you could collide with another jumper. Even though BASE jumping is not always dangerous, it can be very dangerous when done incorrectly. Be sure to follow the safety tips below before you attempt to BASE Jump.

Practice safe BASE jumping techniques starting on a small hill. Be sure to spend a few minutes getting used to the terrain before you jump from a higher one. Second, watch out for weather conditions. You should not jump when the wind blows in your face. Foggy skies can also be a problem. If you are unable to see 10ft ahead, it might be best to wait until the clouds clear. Make sure you have all the necessary gear. A helmet, goggles, gloves and a full-suit with a harness are all essential. Fourth, have a plan. If something goes wrong, ask someone to help you. Don't ever jump by yourself. Always have someone watching over you.
